We’ve a seaside theme this month with jewellery made frombeachcombed treasure, designs inspired by a beach holiday at home orabroad plus a designer challenge with a decidedly ocean feel.Claire Lockwood has again wowed us with her clever use of components in her‘tideline’ project on page 10. Sea urchin spines and driftwood (or twigs from thegarden!) form the basis of her collection teamed with gorgeous ice-cream colouredcords and some ingenious clasps from barnacle shells! The beachcombing themecontinues into the ‘recipes for…’ feature where I show you how to create stunningseaglass jewellery without the need of a drill or any specialist tools (p42).Take a stroll on the beach or explore the rockpools at low tide and you mightdiscover Dawn Gatehouse’s ‘sparkle starfish’ made from wire and Freshwater Pearls(p36) or Michele Trapiche’s copper clay collection ‘ripples and rockpools’ (p60). Andif the clouds arrive and it starts to spot with rain, you can always retreat indoorsto make Hannah Clare Oxberry’s ‘summer showers’ adaptable necklace or getglamorous for the evening with Juliet Browse’s ‘soutache sunset’ earrings (p68).Our ‘make it easy’ project this month is ‘beach & beyond’ – an introduction to beadembroidery so with this and some simple shell necklaces in our Top 8, there’s plentyfor less experienced beaders to enjoy.Along with the pages of project inspiration, we’ve also begun the countdown to our100th issue of Beads & Beyond so be sure to turn to page 57 to find out you mightget involved. So whether you’re a deckchair in the sun or a blanket in the shade kind of person, take your copy outdoors and soak up the summer – we don’t think it will be longbefore you’re back inside for your pliers, wire or beads to paddle in (or dive into!) anew technique!Happy creating!WEditor’schoiceMy choice for Augustis Joanne Tinley’s‘Cornish memories’ ringon page 50. I spenta lot of summers inCornwall as a girl andthe simplicity and beautyof this ring reminds ofthose carefree dayson the beach and thatsunburned glow at night!HelenON THE BLOGDon’t forget to look for extra content on our blogwww.beadsandbeyondmagazine.blogspot.co.uk.This month: more designs from our mini designchallenge winners, some earrings to match the beachtreasure necklace and a ring from Joanne Tinley.Turnto page16 for oursubscriptionofferThis magazine is sold subject to the following conditions: thatit shall not without written consent of the publishers be lent, resold or otherwise disposed of by way of trade in excess of therecommended maximum retail price.
