openness.Feelreceptive,becausesannyashastobereceived;youcannottakeit,youcanonly
receiveit.Itisagift:youcanallowittohappen.Thereisnoneedtograbit.Theonlyneedisto
giveway,toletithappen.
Feelgreatenergyshoweringonyou,asifyouarestandingunderawaterfall.Energyissplashing
onyouandthebodystartsswaying,thebodystartsfeelingdrunk.Gointoit,andifsomethingstarts
happeninginthebody,allowit.
Taoisthenameforthatwhichcannotbenamed,anameforthenameless–justlikegodordhamma
ortruthorlogos.Thesearenotreallynames,buthumanhelplessness.Wehavetocallitsomething,
wehavetoaddressit.Taoisoneofthemostbeautifulnamesgiventotheunknown,becauseitis
utterlymeaningless.Godhasbecomeverymeaningful,henceithaslostsignificance.
Youcanworshipgod,youcannotworshiptao;thereisnoimage.Evenpeoplewhosaythatthey
believeinnoimage,thattheybelieveonlyingod,theytooworship,andintheworshipanimage
arisesautomatically.Youneednotcarveanimageoutofwoodorstone:theimageiscarvedoutof
yourthought,itispartofyourimagination.Youmaynotworshipastoneimage,butthemomentyou
say’god’asubtleimagearisesinyou:somebodysittingthereonagoldenthrone,controllingthe
wholeworld,averywisemanwithawhitebeardandallthat,afatherfigure.Butwith’tao’nofigure
arises.Thatisthebeautyofthename,thatitsimplygivesyounoclue.Itgivesyounoexcusetogo
intoimagination.Itgivesnohelpforyoutobecomeaworshipper.
Thatisthegreatestnamegiventotheunknown.Itissignificantbecauseitismeaningless;itmeans
nothing.Allthatcanbeputintoitisthatitmeanstheway–notawaytoanygoalbutjusttheway

thingsare.Itgivesyounoideaoffuture,ithasnofutureorientation;itsimplysayshowthingsare,
howthingswork.Theriverflowstotheocean:thisistao;thetreegrowsupwards:thisistao;the
childbecomesayoungmanandtheyoungmanbecomesoldandtheoldmandies:thisistao,the
waythingsare.
Allotherwords–god,dhamma,logos–createshouldsinthemind.Thisistheonlywordthatdoes
notcreateashould;itsimplysays,’Thisishowthingsare.’Itsimplydenotesreality,thefacticity
ofit.Itdoesnotgiveyouanought,itdoesnotsayanythingabouthowthingsshouldbe;ithasno
shoulds.Itdoesnotsaythattreesshouldbelikethat,itdoesnotsaythatthemanshouldbelikethis;
itsimplysays:Thisishowthingsare.Totryotherwiseistobeinmisery.Shouldbringsmisery:that
isthemessageoftao,averyrebelliousmessage.Shouldtakesyouastray.Themomentyouthink
intermsofideals,ideology,youaregoingastray.Thenyouarebringingsomegoalsintoyourlife,
youarenotlisteningtonature,youaretryingtoimproveuponit.Anditisutterlyperfect;itcannot
beimproved,thereisnowaytoimproveuponit.Onehassimplytorelaxintoit,onehastobeone
withit.
Thatisthemeaningofthesecondword’sudas’;itmeansinatotallet-go,intheserviceoftao,
surrenderedtotao,aperfectservantoftaowithnoprivategoals.Taoisthemasterandyouare
justashadow.Sudasliterallymeansagoodservant,agoodslave–good,becausehehasno
ego,thereisnoresistance.Heisnotunwillinglyaservant,heiswillinglysurrendered.Dasmeans
servant:unwilling,reluctant;sudasmeansagoodservant:utterlyhappy,willing,surrendered.
Surrendertotao,surrendertonature,dropallshoulds.
That’smywholeworkhere.IfIcangiveyouatongue-tiptasteoftao,myworkisfinished:justalittle
tasteoftao,andthenitgrowsonitsown.Thefirsttasteisdifficult;onceyouhavetasteditjusta
littlebit,thenitissopowerful,sopotential,itspreadsalloveryourbeing.Itoverwhelmsyou,ittakes
youonthegreatestjourneyoflife;intonature,intoreality,intothingsastheyare,intotao.
[Oshogivessannyas:]
Closeyoureyesandfeelfulloflightinside,asifagreatlightisarisingfromyourbellyandfilling
yourwholebody.Iftremblingarises,shaking,swaying,gowithit.Ifyourbodywantstotakesome
posture–ifyourhandsstartmoving–allowit.Simplybepossessedbythislight,andwhereverit
takesyou,go.
...Premmeanslove,mandakanimeansthestars,theriverofthestars,theMilkyWay–love,the
MilkyWay.AndloveistheMilkyWay.Itwalksonearthbutitdoesn’tbelongtous,itbelongstothe
sky.Anditisstarry;allelseisdarknessexceptlove.Onlylovehaslightinit,onlyloveisluminous.
Whenyouareinlovethereislightandlife:whenlovedisappearsthereisdarkness,utterdarkness.
Hellisthespacewherelovedoesnotexist;heavenisthespacewhereonlyloveexistsandnothing
else.Thesearethenamesofspaceswithinourbeing.
LoveopensdoorstothewholeMilkyWay.Loveisthebridgebetweenearthandheaven,between
manandgod.Letlovebeyouronlylaw;thereisnohighertruth.Ifamancanlove,thennothing
elseisneeded;thatwilltransform.

Butafewthingstobekeptinmindaboutlove.Loveshouldnotbeademandinglove;otherwiseit
loseswings,itcannotfly.Itbecomesrootedintheearth,becomesveryearthly;thenitislustand
itbringsgreatmiseryandgreatsuffering.Loveshouldnotbeconditional,oneshouldnotexpect
anythingoutofit.Itshouldbeforitsownsake–notforanyreward,notforanyresult.Ifthereissome
motiveinit,again,yourlovecannotbecomethesky.Itisconfinedtothemotive;themotivebecomes
itsdefinition,itsboundary.Unmotivatedlovehasnoboundary:itispureelation,exuberance,itis
thefragranceoftheheart.
Andbecausethereisnodesireforanyresult,itdoesnotmeanthatresultsdonothappen;they
do,theyhappenathousandfoldmore,becausewhatsoeverwegivetotheworld,itcomesback,it
rebounds.Theworldisanechoingplace:ifwethrowanger,angercomesback;ifwegivelove,
lovecomesback.Butthatisanaturalphenomenon,oneneednotthinkaboutit.Onecantrust:it
happensonitsown.Thisisthelawofkarma:whatsoeveryousow,youreap;whatsoeveryougive,
youget.Sothereisnoneedtothinkaboutit,itisautomatic.Hate,andyouwillbehated.Love,and
youwillbeloved.
Andthethirdthing:letlovebecomemoreandmoreconscious.Whenitisunconsciousitremains
entangledwithsexuality.Nothingiswronginsexualitybutthatisthelowestformoflove,thefirst
rungoftheladder.Itisgoodinitselfbuttoremainconfinedtoitisnottogrow:therearehigher
rungsintheladder.Theladderreachestotheultimateandsexisthefirstrung.Useittogobeyond
it.
Loveshouldbemoreconscious.Whenitisconsciousitislesssexual.Iamnotsayingthatthere
willbenosex:sexwillbetherebutitwillnotbesexual.Itwillbepuresensuality;thatisatotally
differentphenomenon.Itwillbesheerjoy,sensitivity,buttherewillbenosexualmindbehindit.You
willnotbethinkingaboutsex,therewillbenocerebralsexinitnoheadsexinit.Itwillbeasimple
sharingofenergies.Sothesethreethingstoberemembered;thenlove,slowlyslowly,becomes
light.
TheEnglishword’light’isveryverysignificant. Ithastwomeanings:oneislight,luminosity;
anotherisweightlessness.Thosetwomeaningsdon’tseemtobejoinedatallbuttheyhavea
subtleconnection.Whenonebecomesfulloflight,onebecomesweightless;onecanfly,onehas
wings.
[OshogivessannyastotheleaderandfounderoftheActionAnalysiscommunegroups.]
Mmmm,sonowthatgrouphastobeturnedtowardsme,becausetheyareontherightlines
butsomethingismissing.Unlessthatsomethinghappens,thetemplewillremainempty.The
templeisreadybutstillempty.Somethingatthecentreofthetemplehastobeinstalled;something
biggerthanlife,higherthanlife:somethingtranscendental.Lifetakesonmeaningonlywhenthe
transcendentalisreflectedinit;otherwisesoonerorlateralljoysoflifeturnsour.Anditisgoodto
enjoylife,butsoonyouwillfindyouareboredwithit.
Thisageisonthebrinkofboredom,andthereasonisthatthisisthefirsttimeinhistorythatman
isenjoyingmanythings.Inthepast,peoplewerekeptstarvedsotheywereneverfedup.They
werealwaysdesiringanddesiringandhopingandhoping.Butthiscenturyhasgivenyouallthatis
possible,andonceyouseeallthosethings,suddenlyyoufeelempty.Thereisnomoretoit;what
todo?Thisemptinessisgreatifmancanrisealittleupwards.

IhavebeenwatchingtheAAcommune’sworkandIamperfectlyhappy;somethinggoodisonthe
way.Butitisonlythefirststep,andwithoutthesecondstepthewholeeffortwillfizzleout.So
meditatehere,trytounderstandmeandthentakethemessagetoyourpeople!
[Anothersannyasinsays:IfeelsuchadifferencewhenIseeyouandwhenIhearyourvoiceon
cassettes.WhenIseeyou,criticalattitudesalwayscomeupinme.]
Mmmm,thatisthere.Thatisyourchiefcharacteristic,andthedayyoudropitwillbeadayofgreat
transformation.Withthedisappearanceofthatcriticalattitudeyouregowilldisappear.Thatcritical

onascientificproject.Butthecriticalmindisanabsolutebarrierifyouaretryingtoreachyourown
interiority,subjectivity.Withtheobjectiveworlditisperfectlyokay.Withoutitthereisnoscience;
withitthereisnoreligion.Thishastobeunderstood:whenoneisworkingobjectivelyonehastobe
capableofusingit,andwhenoneisworkingsubjectivelyonehastobecapableofputtingitaside.
Itshouldbeusedasameans.Itshouldnotbecomeanideefixe;youshouldbeabletouseitornot,
youshouldbefree.
Thereisnopossibilityofgoingintotheinnerworldwithacriticalmind.Doubtisabarrier,justas
trustisabarrierinscience.Amanoftrustwillnotgoveryfarinscience,cannotgoatall.That’swhy
inthedayswhenreligionwaspredominantintheworlditremainedunscientific.Itisinonlythree
hundredyearsthatscienceprogressed.Fornearaboutfivethousandsyearstherewasnoscience.
Religionwassopredominantthatpeoplewereaccustomedtotrusting.Andtheconflictthatarose
betweenthechurchandsciencewasnotaccidental;itwasveryfundamental.Itwasnotreallya
conflictbetweenscienceandreligion;itwasaconflictbetweentwodifferentdimensionsofbeing:
